It can be stainless steel, carbon metal or another substance. The nipple has threads on each end that are used to connect two other fittings or pipe. When measuring, the length of the nipple includes the threaded area at each end. The piece is turned into place with a wrench on the hexagonal section of the nipple. Some nipples do not have this hexagonal area and these nipples need to be turned with a special nipple wrench.
